Washing the mouth or rinsing with coconut oil (oil pulling) has many benefits when it comes to maintaining a healthy bacterial population.
Some of them are:
At a general level:
Ingredients: Coconut oil and a few drops of essential oil (optional).
Reasons for the essential oil: taste and smell.
Procedure:
Place a tablespoon of coconut oil in the mouth and swish it around with the tongue for 15 to 20 minutes. People who have difficulty keeping coconut oil in the mouth for this length of time can start with 5 to 10 minutes and slowly increase the duration. It is essential to continue to swish and breathe through the nose.
Once this is done, spit the oil into the rubbish bag, not down the sink or toilet, as this can cause a blockage. Do not swallow the coconut oil.
It is best not to brush your teeth immediately to allow retention of good bacteria and rebalancing of the oral microbiome.
I recommend doing it in the morning, on an empty stomach, and then rinsing with water, or with water mixed with baking soda.
~Don’t forget that oil pulling does not prevent you from having to perform your regular oral hygiene, it is an extra that has to be accompanied by proper tooth brushing and flossing.
How to use it on pets:
You can place coconut oil alone on a small, soft gauze or brush and clean your pets teeth!
Always consult your veterinarian.
Ingredients: Coconut oil, baking soda and a few drops of essential oil (whichever one you like best).
Reasons for using bicarbonate: it eliminates bad smells.
I don’t like to use industrial products like deodorants or toothpaste. I prefer natural products. And I’m not saying you shouldn’t use them. Just what I do at home.
You put the preparation in a bottle, mix everything well and you can keep it at room temperature, although if it’s very hot I recommend keeping it in the fridge.
