This concept, called Non-Exercise Thermogenesis, is the energy expended for everything we do that does not include sleeping, eating or exercising; and ranges from simple things like standing and fidgeting to moving.

~ There are many ways to increase this type of thermogenesis, such as walking, dancing, gardening, cleaning, stretching, all everyday movements and even nervous movements like playing with your hands or pen!

Ideas for Practice

Some ideas on how to put it into practice are:

Stretch more: 5 to 10 minutes while watching TV or sitting at work.
Walk more: for example when talking on the phone, walk to work whenever you can, or get off the bus one or two stops earlier, avoid lifts.
Move more: if you can’t stand up and have to work sitting down, a good option is to sit on a balance ball, this way you are activating many muscles.

It is well known that exercise and improving overall fitness are vitally important for our health and well-being, as well as for increasing our ability to participate in the normal activities of daily life.

Some benefits of exercise include a stronger and more efficient heart, reduced risk of heart disease and diabetes, stronger muscles and bones, reduced cholesterol levels and better mental health.
